Brooks Peterson PLLC Honored with NCBA Small Firm Pro Bono Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brooks Peterson PLLC is proud to announce that firm founder Brooks Peterson was honored with the prestigious Small Firm Pro Bono Award at the North Carolina Bar Association’s (NCBA) Annual Meeting. The annual award recognizes small firm practitioners across North Carolina who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to providing equal access to justice and legal support for underserved communities.

Recognized for Disaster Relief and Community Service

Brooks was selected for his dedicated advocacy, particularly in assisting disaster-affected residents in Western North Carolina and helping local seniors secure vital legal protections.

In presenting the award, the North Carolina Bar Association highlighted Peterson’s impactful contributions during his initial months of practice: “After becoming a licensed attorney in September 2024, Brooks Peterson served disaster-affected North Carolinians and provided consistent representation to clients in western North Carolina for many months. He took on complex insurance and consumer matters, which reflected his commitment to clients and dedicated advocacy. Following this assistance with disaster relief cases, he assisted seniors in drafting wills and advance directives. In his first 17 months of being a licensed attorney, Brooks accepted 14 pro bono case referrals. He received his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law and his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University.”

Why Pro Bono Work Matters

While Rule 6.1 of the North Carolina Rules of Professional Conduct encourages attorneys to aspire to at least 50 hours of pro bono legal service per year, pro bono service is not mandatory in the state. Balancing dedicated client service with voluntary legal work requires intentional effort, but it remains a core pillar of the practice at Brooks Peterson PLLC.
